Day 1: Upon your arrival in Gorakhpur, settle into your hotel and have some time to relax. In the evening, there will be a briefing with the CMT (Care My Tours) Team to discuss the upcoming journey. This meeting will cover important details and any necessary preparations for the adventure. Afterward, enjoy an overnight stay at your hotel in Gorakhpur.

Day 2: Start your day with a hearty breakfast, check out from the hotel, and depart for Birgunj border. Once at the India-Nepal border, complete the necessary processes for crossing into Nepal. Afterward, embark on a scenic ride to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel. The CMT Team will collect your original passport for documentation, along with other required forms. Spend the night in Kathmandu, gearing up for the exciting days ahead.

Day 3: After a delicious breakfast, proceed with the visa process for entry into China. Sign the required papers and then enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Take this opportunity to explore Kathmandu or relax and prepare for the upcoming journey. This day serves as a valuable break before the next leg of your adventure. Overnight stay in Kathmandu, anticipating the thrilling experiences that lie ahead.

Day 4: Start your Kathmandu adventure by exploring the cultural and historical gems of the city. Begin your day at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple. Enjoy panoramic views of the city and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. Next, head to the nearby Kathmandu Durbar Square, another UNESCO site, to witness the ancient architecture and intricately carved palaces. In the afternoon, visit the Garden of Dreams, a serene oasis in the heart of the city, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Wrap up your day with a visit to Thamel, Kathmandu’s bustling tourist district, where you can indulge in local cuisine and shop for souvenirs.

Day 5: Immerse yourself in the religious diversity of Kathmandu on day two. Begin with a visit to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu shrines in the world. Experience the rituals along the Bagmati River and explore the surrounding area. Afterward, head to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in Nepal, with its iconic dome and all-seeing eyes. Surrounding the stupa are numerous monasteries and shops offering Tibetan artifacts. In the afternoon, explore Patan Durbar Square, another UNESCO site, known for its well-preserved ancient architecture, including the Krishna Mandir and the Patan Museum.

Day 6: Following breakfast, our visa process is complete, marking the beginning of our journey towards the Nepal-Tibet border. We will enter Tibet through the Gyirong/Rasuwa border, and our team will be there to greet you on the China side. We will assist you with border crossing procedures, customs clearance, and other related formalities. The day concludes with an overnight stay in Gyirong county town.

Embark on an exhilarating adventure today! The journey commences in Gyirong valley town, situated at an impressive altitude of over 2,700 meters. Brace yourself for an exciting ascent, climbing over 1,000 meters in just 2 hours to reach the true high-altitude plateau. Traverse through lush forests before arriving at the awe-inspiring plateau desert landscape. The transformation in scenery is bound to leave you thoroughly impressed.

Day 7: Following breakfast, embark on a journey that includes a drive over the Ghong Thang La mountain pass (5236m). From this vantage point, you’ll have a panoramic view of the 14th highest peak globally, Shishapangma (8027m). Afterward, continue your drive to the serene shores of Pechutso lake. Conclude the day with an overnight stay in Tingri county.

Day 8: Commence your journey to Shigatse at the earliest opportunity, aiming to arrive early in order to initiate the application process for temporary Chinese driving licenses and vehicle number plates at the Shigatse Traffic Administration Bureau.

Important Note: All foreign vehicles and riders are required to obtain temporary Chinese driving licenses in Shigatse (Traffic Administration Bureau) to ensure legal driving/riding within China. In the event that the process cannot be completed on the current day, it will be necessary to continue the proceedings the following day. In the afternoon or the subsequent morning, depending on the progress of the license application, consider a visit to Tashilunpo Monastery. Founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, it stands as one of Tibet’s largest and most significant monasteries. Serving as the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the monastery is renowned for its impressive architecture, captivating murals, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Please note that there is an entrance ticket fee of 100 CNY per person.

Day 9: Proceed to Gyantse, where you will explore Gyantse Kumbum and Pelkhor Chode Monastery (entrance ticket: 70 CNY, additional fee for photography). After enjoying lunch, continue your journey towards Nagaze, making stops to marvel at the Karola Glacier and the enchanting Yamdrok, a sacred lake. Subsequently, make your way to the capital city Lhasa. If time permits in the afternoon, consider visiting Jokhang Monastery and exploring Barkhor Bazaar. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3650 meters, Lhasa serves as the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Renowned as the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, Lhasa boasts iconic landmarks such as the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, making it a significant cultural and religious hub. The city also stands as a prominent tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the globe.

Day 10: Experience a full day of sightseeing in Lhasa, exploring iconic landmarks and immersing yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of this Tibetan city. Choose from a variety of options for your day tour, such as the awe-inspiring Potala Palace, the sacred Jokhang Monastery, and the vibrant Barkhor Bazaar.

Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and is renowned for its breathtaking architecture and historical significance. Explore the grand halls, intricate chapels, and panoramic views of Lhasa from this monumental palace. Jokhang Monastery, another sacred site, is considered the holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism. Marvel at its ancient architecture, sacred relics, and the spiritual ambiance that permeates the surroundings. Barkhor Bazaar, situated around the Jokhang Monastery, offers a lively and colorful shopping experience. Stroll through its bustling lanes filled with traditional shops, local crafts, and a vibrant display of Tibetan culture. After a day filled with exploration, return for an overnight stay in Lhasa, reflecting on the cultural treasures and spiritual heritage that make this city a captivating destination.

Day 11: Embark on a journey to Sagya county town, where you have the option to explore Sagya Monastery in the afternoon or the following morning. Sakya Monastery, situated in Tibet, boasts a rich history spanning over 900 years, housing numerous treasures and cultural relics, such as murals, statues, and scriptures. As the primary monastery of the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism, it is often likened to “the Dunhuang of the Snowy Region.” Admission to the monastery requires a ticket priced at 50 CNY per person.

Day 12: Embark on the journey to Everest Base Camp (EBC). The entrance to the base camp from the park gate involves covering nearly 100 kilometers on a well-paved road with excellent conditions. En route, you’ll traverse through picturesque scenes of green barley fields, Tibetan villages, cross rivers, and navigate numerous winding mountain passes. The driving experience is truly exceptional, making the journey to Everest Base Camp even more enjoyable than reaching the destination itself.

Currently, direct access to Everest Base Camp is restricted for tourists. Instead, visitors have the opportunity to stop and spend the night at Rongbuk Monastery, situated 8 kilometers away from the Base Camp at an altitude of 5050 meters. This strategic pause allows travelers to soak in the grandeur of Mount Everest. Please note that there is an entrance fee for Everest Base Camp, priced at 160 CNY per person, and a Shuttle Tour Bus fee of 120 CNY per person. Additionally, for vehicles, there is an entrance permission fee of 320 CNY per car (free for motorcycles).

Day 13: You will definitely not miss the opportunity to encounter Lake Peiku Tso on the way to Gyirong, it is the largest natural lake in the Shigatse area. As the sun sets, the reflection of the sunset’s afterglow and the peak of Mount Shishapangma(8027m) can be seen in the lake, sparkling like a blue sapphire at the foot of the Himalayas.

Day 14: Exit China via Gyirong border in the morning, then ride to Kathmandu if time allows.
Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Drive to Gorakhpur and tour ends.

 

Regarding the GROUP VISA application in Kathmandu:

1. To enter Tibet from Nepal, foreign tourists have to apply for a GROUP VISA in Kathmandu Nepal, so you don’t need to apply for an individual visa in your home country or a third country because any individual visas are not acceptable at Nepal/China border.

2. To apply for the group visa, there must be at least 4 persons in the group, otherwise, the visa application will not be accepted by the China Visa Center.

3. You can only apply for the Chinese group visa with the passport in which you will get a Nepali entry stamp, because your visa application will not be accepted by the Chines visa center if you don’t have the stamp. (To get a Nepali entry stamp, you will need an exit stamp from Indian border if you are going to enter Nepal from India by land.)

4. We can provide you with all the necessary documents for your visa application in Nepal, such as the letter of invitation(issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau), detailed itinerary, hotel booking list and our company’s business license copies etc.

5. The Embassy/visa center in Kathmandu only accept application submitted by a local authorized visa agent, materials you need to give to the agent: 1) Visa form(need to be filled out in advance)  2) ID photo with white background 3) Orginal passport.

6. Applicants are required to sign a confirmation paper at the visa center or the visa agent’s office after the visa application is submitted, so you are not suggested to leave Kathmandu until you sign the paper.

7. Usually, the visa can be picked up in 4 working days(with normal service) and 3 working days(with urgent service).

Notes:

  1. Please note that you the visa fees(charged by the China visa center/Embassy in Kathmandu) and the visa agent service fees(20usd per person) are Non-refundable even if your application is rejected.

  2. If any mistakes or errors, then we have to do the correction and reapply, so please make sure there’s no mistakes or errors when filling out the visa checklist.

  3. If some of the applicants in the group were rejected by the visa center, the others who get the visa granted can still enter China without any problems.

  4. The visa center will only issue two original visa papers to a group, they are exactly the same, one is for entry, another one is for exit, and the group visa is NOT a regular sticker visa pasted in your passport, it is just an A4 paper with all participants’ passport information on it, please note that the visa paper is UNIQUE, never lose it before/during the trip in China.

  5. Please note that all travelers on the same group visa paper have to enter China and leave China via the same border or port on the same day, the group cannot be split during the trip in China(No matter in Tibet or other province of China).

 

The following points are some basic information about overland tours in China.

1. Paperwork.

To drive a foreign-registered vehicle in China, it is required to have a certified Chinese travel company to apply for the related permits from several different Chinese authorities in advance, our company can help with all related paperwork applications, and travelers are supposed to submit all necessary documents to us around 1.5 months in advance in order to get the permits in time.

Apart from the travel permits, we will also help you apply for a provisional Chinese driving license(vehicle number plate) as well as a provisional Chinese driver’s license for travelers who will be driving/riding in China.

2. Tour guide

So far, a tour guide is mandatory for this kind of self-drive tour in China, and we will send you our experienced guide to help you with the border crossing, translation, navigation, etc. Please note that the guide is not assigned by the government, he/she is just a normal certified tour guide working for our company.

3. Fixed itinerary and travel route

It is required to have the travel route and itinerary fixed before submitting an application to the related authorities. However, it is still possible to change the route a bit in most of the provinces apart from Xinjiang and Tibet.

4. Refundable Security Deposit for foreign vehicles

A certain amount of REFUNDABLE security deposit is supposed to be transferred to China Customs before a foreign vehicle is imported into China (Carnet De Passage is not recognized by China Customs), usually, the deposit is about 70% of the current value of the vehicle(The current value is subject to the brand, model, year of manufacture and engine capacity).

The deposit needs to be transferred to China Customs from our company’s bank account about one week prior to the date of entry, and it will be fully refunded by China Customs in 1-2 weeks after the vehicle left China.

However, to make things easier for both sides, our company would like to cover the deposit without additional charges if the deposit is less than USD 10, 000.

5. Traffic restrictions for motorcycles

Due to the related restrictions, motorcycles are not allowed to use expressways in most of the provinces except for Xinjiang and some areas of Yunnan province, which means riders will have to take national roads, provincial roads, country roads when riding in China, where the speed limits vary from 40km/h – 100km/h, however, these roads are almost free for toll and more scenic than expressways.

6. Age limit for temporary Chinese driver’s license applicants.

To ride a motorcycle over 50cc in China, the age of the applicant shall be between 18 and 59, and the age limit for riding a motorbike under 50cc is 18-69, and to drive a car, the age shall be over 18 years old, but if the applicant is over 70, it is required to pass an examination before obtaining a license.

7. Avoid entering China on a public holiday or at the weekend.

Apart from China/Mongolia border Erenhot, the Customs Office at the other borders does not proceed with customs clearance for any foreign vehicles, therefore, please enter China on a working day, Monday to Wednesday are suggested.
