Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and visit the Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge, supposedly the longest bamboo bridge in Thailand. Everything you need to know before joining our Northern Thailand Motorcycle Expedition, from riding experience and motorcycle rentals to weather, accommodation, safety and booking arrangements.

1. Is the Thailand Motorcycle Tour suitable for beginners?

Our Thailand Motorcycle Tour is designed for intermediate and experienced riders with a minimum of three years of motorcycle riding experience.

Northern Thailand is renowned for its mountain roads, tight hairpin bends, steep gradients and flowing curves. Riders should be confident handling middleweight adventure motorcycles and comfortable riding approximately 200–330 kilometres on longer riding days.

2. Which motorcycles are available for the tour?

Our standard motorcycle options include the Kawasaki Versys 650, Suzuki V-Strom 650 and Honda NX500.

All motorcycles are subject to availability at the time of booking. Riders wishing to upgrade to a higher-capacity motorcycle may contact Care My Tours for available options and applicable upgrade charges.

3. What is the total riding distance and tour duration?

The tour covers approximately 1,300 kilometres across five riding days, with a standard itinerary of 7 days and 6 nights.

Starting and ending in Chiang Mai, the expedition explores Doi Inthanon, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Pai, Chiang Dao, Tha Ton, the Golden Triangle and Chiang Rai.

The majority of the journey follows paved mountain roads, making it ideal for adventure-touring enthusiasts.

4. Is an International Driving Permit required to ride in Thailand?

Yes. International riders must carry a valid motorcycle driving licence from their home country along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) recognised in Thailand and valid for the motorcycle category being rented.

Both documents must be available during motorcycle collection. Riders holding licences issued by ASEAN member countries may be eligible under separate recognition arrangements.

We strongly recommend obtaining the appropriate IDP before departing your home country.

5. Is a security deposit required for the rental motorcycle?

Yes. A refundable security deposit is required at the time of motorcycle collection.

Depending on the motorcycle model and engine capacity (CC), the rental provider may require a cash security deposit or offer a passport-based security arrangement.

The exact deposit amount and acceptable security arrangements vary according to the selected motorcycle.

Please check with Care My Tours before departure for the security deposit requirements applicable to your motorcycle. We recommend retaining your original passport and requesting a cash or card deposit arrangement wherever available.

Security deposits are refundable subject to the motorcycle being returned in accordance with the rental agreement, including applicable damage and other charges.

6. What is the weather like during the January–February 2027 departures?

January and early February are generally excellent months for motorcycle touring in Northern Thailand, offering predominantly dry roads, pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler mountain mornings.

In Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, daytime temperatures generally range between approximately 25°C and 33°C, while mornings and evenings may be around 13°C to 18°C.

Mountain destinations such as Doi Inthanon, Mae Hong Son and Pai can experience significantly colder conditions, particularly during early morning rides and at higher elevations. Temperatures may occasionally drop below 10°C in exposed mountain areas.

Rainfall is usually limited during this period, although mist, fog and occasional reduced visibility are possible. Seasonal haze and air quality can also vary.

We recommend carrying thermal layers, a windproof riding jacket and suitable gloves for the colder sections of the journey.

7. What accommodation is provided during the tour?

The package includes six nights of accommodation in carefully selected hotels and resorts, with daily breakfast.

Accommodation is provided on a twin-sharing basis. We prioritise comfortable properties with convenient locations along the riding route.

A private single room can be arranged at an additional supplement, subject to availability.

8. Is a backup luggage vehicle included during the tour?

A backup luggage vehicle is complimentary for scheduled groups with a minimum of eight riders.

For smaller groups, a dedicated backup vehicle may be arranged at an additional cost, subject to availability.

All guided departures include an experienced road captain who leads the group along the planned itinerary.

9. Are airport transfers included in the package?

Yes. Scheduled group airport transfers from Chiang Mai International Airport to the hotel and back are included on the designated arrival and departure days.

Travellers arriving earlier or departing later than the scheduled tour dates can request private airport transfers at an additional cost.

10. Are meals, fuel and sightseeing activities included?

Daily breakfast and entrance fees for selected attractions mentioned under the package inclusions are covered.

Included sightseeing experiences feature Doi Inthanon National Park, the White Temple, the Long Neck Karen village, Doi Tung Royal Villa and the scheduled Mekong River boat excursion.

Motorcycle fuel, lunches, dinners, alcoholic beverages, personal expenses and activities not specifically mentioned under inclusions are excluded.

11. Is motorcycle insurance included?

Third-party liability insurance for the rental motorcycle is included as specified in the rental arrangement.

Damage to the rented motorcycle, theft, accidents and other liabilities may be subject to deductibles or additional charges under the rental provider’s terms.

All riders are strongly advised to obtain comprehensive international travel insurance that specifically covers riding a motorcycle of the selected engine capacity, medical treatment, personal accidents and emergency evacuation.

12. Can pillion passengers join the Thailand Motorcycle Tour?

Yes. Pillion passengers are welcome on our Thailand Motorcycle Tour.

Our pillion package includes shared accommodation and applicable ground arrangements.

However, riders carrying a pillion should be experienced in handling a motorcycle with a passenger, particularly on winding mountain roads.

Motorcycle suitability, comfort and luggage capacity should be considered before confirming a pillion booking.

13. What riding gear should I carry for the tour?

We recommend all riders bring suitable protective motorcycle riding equipment, including:

  • Certified full-face motorcycle helmet

  • Protective motorcycle jacket and trousers

  • Riding gloves and ankle-protecting motorcycle boots

  • Thermal layers for cold mountain mornings

  • Rain protection and a windproof outer layer

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and personal essentials

January and early February can be surprisingly cold in Northern Thailand’s mountain regions, particularly at Doi Inthanon.

Riders should arrive with suitable protective clothing for varying weather conditions.

14. Can solo riders join the tour?

Absolutely. Solo riders are welcome to join our scheduled group departures.

Our tours bring together motorcycle enthusiasts from different cities and countries who share a passion for riding and exploration.

Twin-sharing accommodation may be arranged with another participant where available and mutually suitable. Riders preferring privacy can request a single-room upgrade at an additional cost.

15. What is the minimum and maximum group size?

Our scheduled group departures are designed for a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 14 participants per batch.

Private and customised guided tours can also be arranged for smaller groups, including two riders, with pricing and support arrangements quoted separately.

This allows us to offer both organised group expeditions and more personalised riding experiences.

16. Are international flights and visas included?

No. International airfare and visa-related expenses are not included in the standard motorcycle tour package.

Travellers are responsible for ensuring that they meet Thailand’s applicable entry requirements based on their nationality and travel documents.

Care My Tours can provide general guidance regarding travel arrangements and documentation upon request.

17. Can Care My Tours arrange a private or customised motorcycle tour?

Yes. We organise private motorcycle expeditions for couples, individual riders, motorcycle clubs and smaller riding groups.

Customised tours can include alternative dates, upgraded motorcycles, preferred accommodation, additional destinations and extended riding itineraries.

Our team can tailor your Northern Thailand motorcycle experience to your riding preferences and available travel time.

18. What happens if there is a motorcycle breakdown during the tour?

Our guided tours are accompanied by an experienced road captain who can coordinate assistance in the event of a mechanical problem.

If a motorcycle develops a technical issue, we coordinate with the local rental provider to arrange appropriate assistance, repair or a replacement motorcycle where available.

Recovery services, replacement arrangements and any related costs are subject to the rental provider’s terms and the circumstances of the breakdown.

19. What are the booking advance and payment requirements?

A booking advance is required to secure your place on the scheduled Thailand Motorcycle Tour.

The published booking advances are:

  • Rider Package: USD 330 per person

  • Pillion Package: USD 200 per person

The remaining balance must be paid according to the payment schedule provided at the time of booking.

Motorcycle allocation, accommodation and participation are subject to confirmation and the applicable booking and cancellation conditions.

Booking your Thailand Motorcycle Expedition with Care My Tours is simple.
